Professional Code of Ethics for Teachers

UGC regulations and professional standards

As the college is fully Government-aided, its teachers are governed by the UGC Professional Code of Ethics enumerated in the “UGC Regulations on Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Teachers and Other Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges and Measures for the Maintenance of Standards in Higher Education, 2018”, published on the UGC website on 20 March 2018. The relevant Clause 17.0 on page 96, excerpted from the Extraordinary Gazette of India No. 271 dated 18 July 2018, is appended below.

Code of Conduct for Students

Standards of discipline, responsibility and campus behaviour

  1. The Principal counts upon the cooperation of all students and their parents or guardians in the strict observance of academic discipline, so as to build and sustain an atmosphere conducive to real education.
  2. Admission to the College implies an agreement to abide by the rules of discipline framed by the College authority.
  3. A sense of corporate life, respect for teachers and unwavering devotion to the traditions of the College are expected from all students.
  4. The College expects every student to:
    1. be well-mannered and polite in behaviour;
    2. act with regard and concern for the welfare and rights of other members of the College community; and
    3. conduct himself or herself in a manner reflecting self-respect as a person and as a student of Jawaharlal Nehru College, Pasighat.
  5. Students should be mutually respectful towards fellow students, teachers and members of the College staff.
  6. Students should maintain strict silence and avoid disturbing those studying or working in classrooms, the Library or the College office.
  7. Students should conduct themselves during all College functions and extracurricular activities in a manner befitting the occasion.
  8. Students should be helpful and polite to guests and visitors and assist them wherever possible.
  9. Students should conduct themselves during examinations in a manner reflecting the highest personal ethics and regard for the rights of fellow students.
  10. Any breach of discipline causing disturbance in examination halls, or use of unfair means during examinations, will be severely punished.
  11. Students must not enter a classroom or the Principal’s chamber without prior permission from the teacher or Principal.
  12. Students must help the College authority keep the campus clean and must not deface College buildings or property by spitting, writing slogans or pasting posters.
  13. Designated notice boards are provided for circulars and posters. Students must not paste or write anything on walls, doors or windows outside the designated spaces.
  14. Students should check the Notice Board every day for necessary information.
  15. Students requiring a certificate or document from the College office must apply to the Head Assistant or Academic Branch at least two working days before it is required.
  16. Smoking and the use of tobacco products, gutka, alcoholic drinks and mobile phones in prohibited areas are strictly prohibited.
  17. Students must wear clothing reflecting decency and etiquette. A committee appointed by the Principal shall ensure implementation of the dress code.

Code of Conduct for Non-Teaching Staff

Standards for administrative and support personnel

  1. Exhibit utmost loyalty to the institution through punctuality and dutifulness.
  2. Uphold professional integrity and honesty in both words and actions.
  3. Maintain professional rapport with students and staff.
  4. Be supportive and kind to the College community as a whole.
  5. Show zeal for the development of professional competence.
  6. Maintain complete confidentiality in official matters.
  7. Work with a wider perspective towards the development of society.
  8. Respect the hierarchy within the administration.
  9. Adhere strictly to office hours and dress decently and appropriately.
  10. Do not allow another person to perform official duties on one’s behalf.
  11. Set a positive example for others to emulate as a Government servant.
Institutional commitment: Every member of the College community is expected to uphold these principles and contribute to a safe, disciplined and academically enriching environment.
